On the back of my car, I've got two symbols. The symbol on the left denotes the fact that I am an Ironman. The symbol on the right suggests that I am a Christian. Wherever I drive, people who see my car could rightly assume that I'm both fit and faithful. So here's the million dollar question. Am I living my life in such a way that people can see - not just by my words, but by my actions - that I am who I suggest I am?
It's pretty obvious that I walk the talk of an Ironman athlete. I train daily. I show for races I've committed to competing in, often preparing months in advance, without a day off, to ensure that I'm ready for the big event. People see me train, they see that fitness and wellness is a way of life for me, and they know that it's a passion of mine. I don't have to tell anybody that I'm a triathlete. I am because I do.
But is it so obvious that I am a Christian? Is my daily walk confirmation or a contradiction of my faith? Are my actions, my behaviors, my deeds aligned with Whom I suggest I follow? Just as people see that I am an athlete, a committed and dedicated competitor, through my daily pursuits on the road or in the gym, can they see that I am a committed and dedicated follower who is LIVING his purpose not just through words but through deeds?
THIS is my daily challenge. It's far easier for me to get my butt out of bed in the morning and train. I've been doing it religiously for 25+ years. But to move through each day intentionally living in a way which visibly demonstrates my faith and the love that I am called to share with others - even those who have hurt or wronged me? No easy task. But if my life is to be confirmation of my faith, then I must. We must live in a way which attracts and does not repel others to the love and life in Jesus Christ. Our actions must align with our words. We must live the symbols which we claim represent us.
"You are the light of the world. A City on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven." - Matthew 5:14-16
I love your blog, it's inspiring. When you mention that it's "no easy task to move through each day intentionally living in a way that visibly demonstrates my faith ..." isn't it awesome that it isn't our task at all ... we are to put on Christ and not strain to be Him. As Paul said,
ReplyDelete"I have been crucified with Christ ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me." Gal 2:20
What a privilege it is to be the vessel through which Christ ministers to others.
